Mount Anak Krakatau remains on Level III alert, with a 3-kilometer safety zone

Mount Anak Krakatau remains at alert Level III, and authorities are keeping people at least 3 kilometers from the volcano's activity center. Lana Saria, head of Indonesia's Geological Agency at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, said the status had not been raised but still reflected high volcanic activity and the possibility of an eruption.

"Level III alert status does not mean that the volcano is not highly active. It shows that volcanic activity is at a high level and that an eruption can occur," Lana said during an online briefing on the situation after the eruption.

The agency's assessment focuses on threats around the body of Anak Krakatau. Lana said officials did not determine the alert level solely by measuring the number or height of eruption columns. They also examined the characteristics and energy of eruption earthquakes, volcanic and low-frequency earthquakes, harmonic vibrations, continuous tremors, changes in the volcano's deformation, gas emissions, crater conditions and shifts in its morphology.

Authorities will continue evaluating the situation in real time around the clock. The current danger is expected to remain concentrated around the activity center, based on the eruption's characteristics, the reach of ejected material, the volcano's morphology and visual observations. The 3-kilometer recommendation could be expanded if eruption energy or scale increases significantly, material travels farther, deformation or internal pressure rises, the volcano becomes less stable, or pyroclastic flows and other hazards appear beyond the current boundary.

For now, officials said the latest developments pose no identified threat to residential areas.
