Mountaineer Nirmal Purja dies in Pakistan avalanche

Nirmal Purja, the celebrated Nepali-British mountaineer famous for his "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible" challenge, has died in a snow avalanche in Pakistan. Purja was leading a 10-person international expedition team attempting to scale Broad Peak, one of the world's highest mountains, when the disaster occurred on July 30.

Purja's mountaineering company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed the tragic news on social media, stating, "We are deeply saddened and heartbroken to confirm that Nirmal passed away in an avalanche on Broad Peak." The company also reported that the other members of the expedition team were lost in the incident. The team included climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the United States, and China.

Purja, a former Gurkha soldier and British special forces member, achieved global recognition in 2019 by summiting all 14 mountains over 8,000 meters (approx. 26,000 feet) in a record-breaking six months and six days. This extraordinary accomplishment was later featured in the popular Netflix documentary released in 2021, significantly boosting his international profile.

Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed his condolences on social media, mourning the loss of Purja and the other climbers. "The life journey of the deceased climbers... may have ended, but the history written by the courage, dedication, and contribution they demonstrated will forever inspire the world," Dahal stated.
