Mozambique Seizes 1.4 Tons of Fentanyl at Capital Airport

Mozambique has intercepted a significant haul of 1.4 tons of fentanyl at its capital's airport, Maputo. The illicit substance arrived from São Paulo, Brazil, according to the Mozambican National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC). This operation marks a critical juncture in the nation's battle against dangerous narcotics.

SERNIC emphasized the drug's extreme destructive potential, noting it is far more potent than heroin, morphine, and cocaine. The seized fentanyl was concealed within 207 boxes, disguised among cosmetic products. Authorities confirmed the shipment was expected in three installments during the first eleven days of August.

Following the discovery, law enforcement apprehended a 31-year-old Mozambican national as he attempted to collect the packages. This latest bust comes just two months after a massive seizure in June, where 3.7 tons of fentanyl were found in private company warehouses at Maputo airport. That earlier confiscation, involving fifty boxes each containing 30 packages of the substance, was attributed by SERNIC to an international drug trafficking network.
