MRCB Secures RM3 Billion LRT Rail System Contract in Penang

Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB), through its joint venture with Theta Edge Bhd, has secured a significant RM3.028 billion contract for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang. The joint venture, known as MRCB-Theta Edge JV, has been appointed as the turnkey contractor responsible for the entire rail system.

This comprehensive contract covers engineering, procurement, design, construction, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the rail system. The appointment allows for the detailed design of the rail system to proceed in parallel with ongoing civil construction, ensuring both components remain aligned to meet the project's overall implementation timeline.

The scope of the Turnkey System Contract (STC) includes seven main rail system packages. These encompass the electric trains and depot equipment, signaling and train control systems with platform screen doors, track work, conductor rails, maintenance vehicles, and the power supply and distribution system. Additionally, it includes the rail SCADA system, computerized maintenance management system, telecommunications and IT systems, and the automatic fare collection system.

Meanwhile, the tender process for the Civil Main Contract 2 (CMC2) package, which extends the alignment from KOMTAR to Penang Sentral, is progressing with tender evaluations underway. MRT Corp aims to award this contract by November 2026. The project also emphasizes Bumiputera participation, with over 20% of the total contract value in the CMC1 package allocated to Bumiputera firms, reflecting a commitment to developing local industry capabilities.
