MTN and Ghana Wildlife Society promote sustainability through biodiversity walk

Birds moving through the trees and colourful butterflies among the vegetation greeted participants at a biodiversity walk in Accra’s Legon Botanical Gardens. MTN Ghana organized the event with the Ghana Wildlife Society as part of its Sustainability Month activities.

The walk brought together members of the MTN Media Republic, media practitioners, environmental enthusiasts and civil society organizations. Led by Ghana Wildlife Society Executive Director Dr Sandra Owusu-Gyamfi, it offered participants a chance to observe birds and butterflies in their natural surroundings and learn about their ecological importance.

Owusu-Gyamfi said a stronger connection with nature could encourage people to take greater responsibility for protecting wildlife and the environment. She urged Ghanaians to reduce their reliance on plastics and use environmentally friendly alternatives at home, at work and in public spaces.

She warned that plastic waste, particularly microplastics, threatens marine life and the wider ecosystem. The event followed MTN’s Sustainability Month theme, “Small Actions, Big Impact.”

MTN Acting General Manager of Sustainability Georgina Asare Fiagbenu said the company was putting its commitments into practice through initiatives such as solar panels at its offices and MTN House, along with waste-recycling programs. Corporate Communications Senior Manager Efua Falconer said involving the media could improve understanding of sustainability issues and the role of businesses and individuals in protecting the environment.
