Music and Drones Launch Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo ignited the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games with a spectacular opening ceremony, marking the event's centenary. A vibrant 90-minute spectacle unfolded at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium, blending music, dance, and cutting-edge technology to honor a century of regional sporting history and Dominican culture.

The ceremony showcased the rich tapestry of the Caribbean and Central America, featuring over 900 dancers from national troupes and regional academies. The Dominican National Symphony Orchestra and National Choir provided a powerful soundtrack, led by Maestro José Antonio Molina. The official theme song, "Corazón de Fiesta," by Dominican group Ilegales, resonated through the stadium.

Technological innovation was a key element, with over 30,000 LED devices illuminating the crowd, laser light shows, and a breathtaking aerial display by 1,100 drones that transformed the night sky into a canvas of light. This blend of tradition and modernity set the stage for the region's largest sporting gathering.

This edition of the Games is set to be the largest ever, with approximately 6,200 athletes competing across 40 sports and 53 disciplines. A record 3,244 medals are up for grabs, alongside crucial qualification spots for international competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The event required an investment of 9 billion Dominican pesos (approximately $154.2 million), primarily for facility upgrades and the host delegation's preparation.

Top athletes, including Dominican Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino and Cuban boxer Julio César La Cruz, are among the expected stars. While the official opening was on July 24, 2026, some competitions, like water polo and badminton, commenced earlier on July 20, with the first medals to be awarded shortly after the opening.
