Mysterious crocodile sighting causes stir in Italian village

The unexpected appearance of a crocodile in a small village in Tuscany, Italy, has caused a stir among residents and drawn a crowd of curious onlookers and hunters to the area. The reptile was first spotted lurking in a murky lake in the village of Masiano.

Images of the crocodile, showing its eyes and snout breaking the surface of the water, quickly went viral in May. Since then, the village, located about 43 kilometers northwest of Florence, has been divided between those who believe the crocodile is real and those who doubt its existence.

Local speculation suggests the crocodile may have escaped from private ownership and found its way into the lake during a major flood that affected the region approximately three years ago. The lake, estimated to be 15 meters deep, is reportedly stocked with various fish species, providing a sufficient food source for the reptile. Its steep banks and a sturdy fence are thought to prevent its escape into surrounding areas.

Following the mysterious discovery, the lake's owner reported the incident to local police and hired Olivier Behra, a professional crocodile hunter from France, to capture the animal. Despite setting up camera traps and iron cages over the past week, Behra's efforts have yet to yield any results.
