Naci Görür Issues Critical Warning After Gaziantep Earthquake: 'I Fear...'

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake rattled the Nurdağı district of Gaziantep, Turkey, in the early hours of June 13, 2026. The tremor was felt across Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Osmaniye, and Hatay provinces.

Following the earthquake, prominent seismologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür expressed concern on social media. He noted that the earthquake occurred near the Kuzoluk-Nurdağı regions, situated between segments of the Amanos and Ölüdeniz Fault Zones. Görür warned that the seismic activity might indicate internal fragmentation of the tectonic plates, a potential consequence of the powerful earthquakes that struck the region on February 6, 2023.

"The earthquake is on the plate boundary and edges. I fear that due to the effect of the February 6 earthquakes, the insides of the plates will fracture. Get well soon," Görür posted, sharing a graphic of the seismic event. The earthquake's epicenter was recorded at a depth of 7.01 kilometers.

Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi reported that as of the latest update, there were no negative consequences reported following the earthquake. Emergency teams are continuing their on-site assessments in the affected areas. The region remains on alert due to its significant seismic activity.
