Kwara orders oxygen cylinders for children’s hospital

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate delivery of specific oxygen cylinder sizes to the Children’s Specialist Hospital in Ilorin. This directive comes after an inspection by the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB) highlighted difficulties in oxygen supply and delivery at the facility.

Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, Executive Secretary of KW-HMB, led the monitoring team during the visit. The inspection assessed various aspects of the hospital's operations, including service delivery, staff performance, patient care, and general facilities. Specific areas examined included ventilation at the Emergency Paediatric Unit, power supply, water systems, drug availability, and space management.

Our responsibility is to ensure that our hospitals provide safe, effective and patient-centred care. We will continue to monitor our facilities, identify areas requiring improvement and work with the management and staff to address them.

Malik emphasized the importance of regular monitoring to identify healthcare delivery challenges and ensure government hospitals provide safe and effective services. Responding to concerns raised by the hospital's Chief Medical Director, Dr. Mosunmola Folorunsho, about the operational difficulties caused by varied oxygen cylinder sizes, Malik directed the Board's Engineering and Development Projects Department to supply the preferred size.

The KW-HMB stated that this intervention is crucial for improving efficiency and ensuring timely oxygen delivery to patients. Malik also commended the hospital's management and staff for their dedication and urged them to maintain professionalism and compassion. The Board will review observations from the inspection to implement appropriate measures within its capacity.
