Nam Jong-seop Elected Head of National Assembly Chairmen's Association, Vows to Boost Local Powers

Nam Jong-seop, chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly, has been elected as the new president of the National Association of City and Provincial Assembly Chairmen. This marks a significant return for the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly to lead the association, which represents all 16 city and provincial assemblies across South Korea, after an eight-year hiatus since 2018.

The election is expected to accelerate efforts to enact a local assembly law and strengthen the powers of local councils nationwide. Nam, representing the Democratic Party for Yongin 3, was unanimously elected during the association's regular meeting in Sejong City.

Upon taking office, Nam outlined three core objectives: enacting a local assembly law, bolstering the solidarity of local assemblies nationwide, and expanding educational and policy exchanges. He emphasized the immediate priority of establishing a local assembly law that grants greater organizational and budgetary autonomy, along with policy support systems. Nam pledged to continuously persuade the National Assembly and the government to implement these institutional reforms.

Furthermore, Nam plans to broaden cooperation not only among provincial assemblies but also with city and county councils. This collaborative approach aims to jointly address issues related to autonomous decentralization and to share successful legislative practices and policy achievements. The move signifies a renewed push for greater local autonomy and enhanced legislative capabilities at the regional level.
