Nature, Culture, and Coffee in Jayawijaya Attract More Tourists, Says Ministry of Tourism

Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) believes Jayawijaya Regency in Papua Pegunungan has significant potential to become a leading destination, leveraging its natural beauty, cultural richness, and coffee production. The ministry views the region's traditional customs, mountainous terrain, and coffee commodities as powerful draws capable of increasing tourist numbers and stimulating the local economy. Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Enik Ermawati highlighted the comprehensive nature of tourism in Papua Pegunungan, particularly in Jayawijaya, which blends natural splendor, cultural heritage, and high-value agricultural products. During her inaugural visit to Wamena, the deputy minister, along with the Minister of Cooperatives and local regents, visited Kumukima Tourist Village and the Aikima Tourist Village, known for its mummy sites, an icon of the Baliem Valley culture. "We were very happy with this inaugural visit to Wamena," Ni Luh stated. She noted that the 34th Baliem Valley Cultural Festival in 2026 will feature an enhanced concept, combining traditional cultural attractions with the Wamena Coffee Festival and Noken Street Fashion. "We are very pleased to be here and witness the preparations and implementation of the 34th Baliem Valley Cultural Festival in 2026 with cultural attractions, the Wamena Coffee Festival, and Noken Street Fashion," she added. Ni Luh emphasized that Papua Pegunungan's cultural wealth is a unique asset and that tourism development must prioritize the preservation of customs and traditions. Agrotourism also presents a promising prospect, with Wamena coffee and pineapples offering opportunities for experience-based tourism packages that add value for the local community.
