'AC Children' Phenomenon and Generation Alpha's Resilience Under Scrutiny

A phenomenon circulating on social media, termed 'AC children,' highlights concerns about Generation Alpha's apparent struggle with outdoor heat and discomfort. Videos have surfaced showing young children becoming distressed, crying, or panicking during outdoor activities like school ceremonies due to the weather.

According to Prof. Dwi Hastuti, a child-rearing and development expert at IPB University, Generation Alpha, born between 2010 and 2025, has grown up surrounded by rapid technological advancements and conveniences, including widespread use of air conditioning. This upbringing, she suggests, may lead them to become accustomed to ease, potentially impacting their resilience, mental fortitude, and fighting spirit compared to earlier generations.

Prof. Hastuti also noted that the surrounding lifestyle, heavily influenced by social media, encourages children to compare their own experiences with those of others or public figures they follow. This constant comparison, coupled with the ease of facilities, can foster an 'instant gratification' mindset. For instance, when feeling hot, children might immediately turn on the air conditioning instead of exploring alternatives like using a hand fan, seeking a cooler spot, or wearing breathable cotton clothing.

This pattern of seeking immediate comfort without exploring other solutions could make children less adept at problem-solving when faced with challenges. Furthermore, Prof. Hastuti pointed out that a sedentary lifestyle, characterized by minimal physical activity, is becoming increasingly common among Generation Alpha.
