Nchimbi remains the same, even now

Some politicians have histories measured by the offices they held. Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi’s record, Mwananchi argues, requires another measure: whether he carried the same political positions with him as those offices changed.

Nchimbi began building his career inside Chama Cha Mapinduzi, or CCM, in 1998, when he was elected to the party’s National Executive Committee. He later became chairman of the CCM Youth Wing, UVCCM. In 2005, he won the Songea Urban parliamentary seat, opening a path through deputy minister and ministerial posts, ambassadorial service, the CCM secretary-generalship and, eventually, the vice presidency.

The article says his defining feature is not the number of positions he occupied, but the way he faced political turbulence without completely changing his public image. In December 2013, he resigned as home affairs minister after pressure that followed a parliamentary committee report on Operation Tokomeza. Mwananchi describes that episode as one of the first major setbacks in his rise through government, but says it did not change his political language or identity.

Another test came during CCM’s process for choosing its 2015 presidential candidate. Nchimbi was among Central Committee members who publicly objected to the way Edward Lowassa’s name was removed from the process, paving the way for John Magufuli to carry the party’s banner. He joined Adam Kimbisa and Sophia Simba in openly expressing dissatisfaction. Yet after CCM selected Magufuli, Nchimbi stayed within the party and called for unity and victory. He later became Tanzania’s ambassador to Brazil, received a strong party warning in 2017 and was barred from contesting party positions for four years over his stance in the 2015 election. He returned as CCM secretary-general in 2024 and became vice president after the 2025 election. The article’s central point is that he changed seats more often than he changed his political voice.
