Nearly 1,700 entries vie for Vietnam's National Press Award

The 20th National Press Award, an event celebrating two decades of journalistic excellence in Vietnam, has garnered an impressive 1,692 entries for its preliminary judging round. This significant number underscores the enduring prestige and relevance of the award within the Vietnamese media landscape, even as the industry navigates a period of considerable change.

This is the year marking 20 years the award has been implemented, continuing to affirm its position as the leading prestigious professional award for journalists nationwide.

As noted by Mr. Nguyễn Đức Lợi, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, 2025 is a pivotal year for Vietnamese journalism. Many media outlets are undergoing restructuring, streamlining operations, and reducing redundancies to enhance efficiency. Simultaneously, they face intense competition from social media platforms. Despite these pressures, the National Press Award continues to thrive, drawing full participation from press associations nationwide, a testament to its strong influence and credibility.

However, the press award continues to receive full participation from the press association system across the country, with 20 branches and 33 affiliated branches and 34 out of 34 provincial and city journalist associations. This shows that the award's reach and prestige are still maintained strongly, even though the press industry is facing many fluctuations.

The sheer volume of submissions—1,752 works initially, with 1,692 advancing to the preliminary round after disqualifications—highlights the dedication and professional spirit of Vietnamese journalists. These entries represent a diverse range of media, including print, online, television, radio, and increasingly, multimedia and creative journalism such as infographics, video clips, and podcasts. This reflects the ongoing digital transformation within newsrooms across the country.

This year's award categories are comprehensive, covering 13 distinct groups across all media types. The preliminary judging council has observed that most entries are well-prepared, adhere to the award's criteria, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism. A notable new guideline encourages direct submission of photojournalism entries, bypassing intermediate associations. The council is committed to an objective and fair evaluation process to ensure that only the most deserving works, upholding the award's esteemed reputation, advance to the final round.
