Nearly 66 Hectares Around Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake Considered for Redevelopment

Hanoi is seeking public feedback on a plan to renovate and restructure nearly 66 hectares around Hoan Kiem Lake, expanding the focus beyond the lake's water surface and surrounding gardens.

The study area covers about 65.89 hectares in the Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards. It is bordered by Hang Gai and Cau Go streets to the north, Hai Ba Trung and Dang Thai Than streets to the south, and Hang Trong, Nha Tho, Au Trieu, Nha Chung and Quang Trung streets to the west.

Under the proposal, Hoan Kiem Lake would be organized as a large square and a symbol of the capital. The space would connect with August Revolution Square and the Hanoi Opera House, creating a continuous historical, cultural and artistic area, according to Hanoi's Department of Construction.

At the lake's northern side, planners are studying an expansion of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and stronger links to the lake and an eastern park and square. The proposal also includes a possible landmark arch inspired by the image of crane wings rising upward.

The eastern side could gain a connected system of squares and parks around Hanoi's municipal headquarters, Ly Thai To Flower Garden, Hanoi Post Office and Hoa Phong Tower. The area around Ba Kieu Temple would also be reorganized and linked more closely with Dinh Le and Trang Tien streets and nearby commercial and service spaces. Public and underground service functions are also under consideration.

The plan could significantly alter some existing sites. A new nine-story building with four basement levels is being studied near the municipal headquarters, alongside proposals to dismantle the current People's Council and People's Committee headquarters, Khan Quang Do Theater and the Children's Palace complex. Three French-era buildings, the Infant School, the Indochina Treasury and the former City Hall, are instead slated for preservation.
