Negeri Sembilan Polls: Stable Administration or Chaotic Political Coalition?

Voters in Negeri Sembilan are presented with a significant choice in the upcoming state election: maintain the current Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led government, which aligns with the federal administration, or opt for a coalition between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Misrinah Misban, a senior lecturer at Universiti Utara Malaysia's Centre for International Studies, noted that PH emphasizes its stable governance record and commitment to the welfare of all communities, including initiatives to ease the cost of living. Conversely, the BN-PN alliance presents a different vision for governance, although perceived differences among its leaders during the campaign have drawn attention.

PH argues that its state government has a stable administration record and experience governing the state, focusing on the welfare of people of all races, including implementing various initiatives to help ease the cost of living.

PH's manifesto outlines 10 key commitments, including stable and clean governance, strengthening the "Skim Sejahtera Rakyat" (People's Welfare Scheme), creating 30,000 high-paying jobs, and providing 20,000 affordable homes.

However, there are views that the cooperation between the two parties remains a concern due to several differences in stance that have arisen among their leaders during the campaign period.

During the campaign, statements from BN and PN leaders have also garnered attention. Notably, UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi advised Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor to focus on his own state rather than campaigning in Negeri Sembilan. This followed controversial remarks by Muhammad Sanusi concerning race and multiracial sensitivities. Ahmad Zahid also commented on a proposal by Parti Wawasan Negara Secretary-General Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah to name Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as a potential Prime Minister candidate post-16th General Election.

Misrinah believes the Negeri Sembilan election results will not only determine the state's administration for the next five years but also offer insights into the national political trajectory. Voters are expected to weigh administrative track records, manifesto promises, and political stability when making their decision.
