Neighbor's alert leads to arrest of FBI's most wanted fugitive in Vermont

An alert neighbor in Alburgh, Vermont, near the Canadian border, has led to the apprehension of a fugitive previously listed among the FBI's most wanted. The individual was attempting to force entry into a residence when authorities intervened.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents initially noticed an abandoned vehicle blocking a road early on July 16. Later that morning, a resident reported a person trying to illegally enter their home. CBP agents responded and arrested the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Indian citizen Nitish Kaushal.

Upon verifying his identity, agents discovered Kaushal had been placed on the FBI's wanted list just days earlier in July 2026. He is accused of participating in a transnational criminal organization known as the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Organized Crime Group (GCO Bhagwanpuria), which originated in Punjab, India, and operated in various locations, including California. Authorities allege Kaushal committed violent acts, such as kidnappings and assaults, on behalf of the GCO Bhagwanpuria.

Kaushal was found with a small quantity of suspected narcotics, pending lab analysis. He was taken to Northwestern Medical Center for treatment of a possible leg injury sustained during the incident. Following his medical release, the FBI took custody to continue the investigation and prosecution. A federal arrest warrant was issued on June 25 after he was charged with conspiracy under the RICO Act.
