Nepal Farmers Receive Temporary Irrigation After Flood Destroys Canal

Farmers in Roli Jiula, Jajarkot, Nepal, are receiving immediate relief after a flood on August 14 destroyed the Taksugad stream irrigation canal, threatening their paddy crops. The Nalgad Municipality, in collaboration with the Drinking Water and Irrigation Office, Jajarkot, has provided 500 meters of pipe to temporarily irrigate the fields.

The flood not only obliterated the irrigation canal but also damaged the Bheri Corridor road and swept away four houses. The destruction of the canal left local farmers concerned about the paddy crop, which requires timely irrigation to prevent drying and yield reduction. They had urged for an alternative irrigation arrangement.

Recognizing the urgency, the municipality initiated the process to secure pipes as a temporary measure while permanent canal reconstruction is not immediately feasible. Mayor Dambar Rawat and Deputy Mayor Devaka Lamichhane directed the efforts, leading to the provision of 500mm pipes. Installation is set to begin soon, offering farmers much-needed irrigation for the time being.

The temporary pipe solution is expected to safeguard the paddy crop in Roli Jiula, a vital agricultural area for Nalgad-10. While this addresses the immediate crisis, the municipality acknowledges the long-term necessity of rebuilding the damaged canal. Reconstruction and repair work on various flood-affected structures, including roads and homes, are being planned in phases.
