Nepal flood death toll surpasses 680 as search for 3,000 missing continues

The death toll from a devastating flash flood in northern Nepal has climbed to at least 682, as rescue teams battle challenging conditions to find nearly 3,000 missing individuals. The disaster, which struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet, has swept away entire villages, leaving a trail of destruction.

Nepalese authorities reported 675 fatalities within their country, while seven deaths were confirmed in China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The sheer scale of the disaster is reflected in the staggering number of missing persons, with Nepal accounting for approximately 2,426 and Tibet reporting 554. The German Foreign Office also noted a high single-digit number of German citizens unaccounted for, with diplomatic missions in Nepal and China in close contact with families and local authorities.

Rescue efforts are being significantly impeded by monsoon rains, thick mud, and massive amounts of debris. Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet described the deposited mud as the most difficult obstacle, making helicopter landings in affected areas like Temure, Syabrubesi, and Mailung nearly impossible. Rescuers are resorting to manual digging through meters of mud and rubble in search of survivors.

Adding to the crisis, the risk of infectious diseases is escalating in the flooded regions. Contaminated water sources, damaged sanitation facilities, and overcrowded emergency shelters create fertile ground for outbreaks like cholera. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies estimates that around 93,000 people have been affected by the disaster, highlighting the immense humanitarian challenge ahead.
