Nepal floods: Aid groups urge cash donations for thousands displaced

Nepal is grappling with the aftermath of devastating flash floods that have claimed at least 160 lives and left hundreds missing. The disaster, triggered by a glacial lake outburst, has displaced an estimated 10,000 households, destroying homes, livelihoods, and essential infrastructure.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the affected Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. However, many of the worst-hit villages remain inaccessible by land due to landslides and damaged bridges, necessitating air transport for aid delivery. The scale of destruction is still being assessed, with entire settlements, markets, roads, and hydropower facilities swept away or severely damaged.

In response to the crisis, government officials and aid organizations are urging the public to contribute financially. They emphasize that cash donations are the most effective form of support, allowing local organizations to procure and distribute supplies tailored to the shifting needs on the ground. Physical goods present logistical challenges in reaching remote, cut-off areas.

The Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund, administered by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, is the government's official channel for relief funds. The Nepali Embassy in Washington and Consulate General in New York are directing donors to bank account details provided by the Prime Minister's Office. The Nepal Red Cross Society is actively involved in relief efforts, with over 200 staff and volunteers engaged in evacuations, search and rescue, and distributing emergency supplies. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has also released emergency funding to support the Nepal Red Cross response.
