Nepal Floods Cause $2.56 Billion in Damage and Destroy Thousands of Homes

Nepal is facing an estimated $2.56 billion bill after severe floods damaged homes, public facilities and infrastructure across several areas.

The government plans to begin an initial recovery phase requiring about $52.6 million over the first four months. The immediate focus will be on the most urgent damage and on restoring essential services in affected communities.

Dharma Raj Upreti, head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, said emergency measures would include repairing damaged roads, providing temporary shelter and securing drinking water. Authorities also plan to restore electricity supplies in areas where services were cut.

Officials prepared the initial funding estimate in coordination with relevant sectors and government departments. They intend to carry out a more comprehensive assessment in the next phase to establish the scale of the losses more precisely and set priorities for reconstruction.
