Nepal's worst flood: 8 South Koreans among over 400 missing

A sudden flood in Nepal's Rasuwa district has resulted in at least 31 confirmed deaths and left more than 400 people missing, according to Nepalese authorities. Among the missing are eight South Korean nationals who were working at a hydropower plant construction site in the region. An additional ten South Korean workers are reported to be stranded and awaiting rescue.

The disaster struck Nepal's north-central Bagmati Province, a mountainous area bordering China. The floods are believed to have been triggered by landslides, possibly exacerbated by recent seismic activity. The Nepalese government has dispatched rescue teams, including army and police personnel, who are utilizing helicopters for search and rescue operations in the affected areas.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has directed a comprehensive response, prioritizing the safety of his citizens. He ordered the mobilization of all available resources for the search and rescue of the missing individuals. The President also emphasized close cooperation with Nepalese authorities, support for the families of the missing, and ensuring the safety of South Korean citizens currently in Nepal, while also working to prevent further damage.

The South Korean Embassy in Nepal has notified Nepalese authorities about the missing citizens and requested swift and active rescue efforts. A consular official has been dispatched to the scene. The South Korean government has established an emergency response headquarters, led by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, and plans to deploy a rapid response team comprising members from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Fire Agency, and the National Police Agency to Nepal.
