Nepal-Tibet floods: 72 Malaysians safe in China, 55 in Nepal still missing

Malaysia's Foreign Ministry reported that 55 Malaysians remain uncontactable in Nepal following severe flash floods that hit the country on August 26. The ministry confirmed that two Malaysians previously listed as uncontactable have since been reached.

Search and rescue efforts are actively underway in Nepal. As of August 29, no Malaysians have been identified among the 116 foreign nationals officially reported as rescued. The ministry is coordinating closely with Nepalese authorities and family members to ascertain the whereabouts of those missing.

In a separate but related development, 72 Malaysians in Darchen, China, have been confirmed safe and are receiving consular assistance from the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing. However, telecommunications disruptions have led to 36 other Malaysians being reported as uncontactable in affected areas within China.

The ministry is working with Chinese authorities to establish contact with these individuals and is cross-checking reports to avoid duplication with cases involving Malaysians in Nepal. The ministry's operations room is functioning around the clock to manage these efforts.
