Nepal warns of new flood risk as lake threatens to burst

Nepal faces a new threat of flash floods as a lake formed by recent devastating inundations now risks bursting its banks. The country's disaster management authority issued a stark warning, urging residents and tourists near the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers to stay clear and remain indoors until further notice.

The immediate danger stems from the growing volume of water accumulated after previous flooding, creating a precarious situation. Officials are closely monitoring the potential breach, which could unleash a second or third wave of flooding.

This new warning comes as Nepal grapples with the aftermath of severe floods and landslides that have already claimed at least 270 lives and left over 1,300 people missing. The missing include international travelers and pilgrims drawn to the Himalayan nation's towering peaks and sacred sites.
