Nervous Germany: Alarm After Alarm, Is Russia Behind It All?

Germany is on edge. In several states, dangerous incidents have occurred within a short period, and some are being linked to a suspected foreign power. Every infrastructure failure now attracts attention, while the discovery of an explosive device brings politicians under immediate pressure to explain what happened.

The incidents have affected both eastern and western Germany. In Brandenburg, police and the power-grid operator found several improvised explosive devices at a power station in Turnow-Preilack. The devices damaged power lines. Jan Redmann, Brandenburg’s interior and municipal affairs minister, spoke to the media during a visit to the facility.

North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria have also experienced incidents since Tuesday. The sequence has prompted federal and local politicians to call press conferences, reflecting the scale of the unease. In Germany, even a technical failure can deepen fears when it follows a suspected act of sabotage or another dangerous disruption.

The timing adds political tension. Germany is approaching important elections, after which the pro-Russian Alternative for Germany, or AfD, could take power in an eastern state. Against that backdrop, each new alarm feeds questions about whether the incidents are connected and whether an outside power is involved.

The concerns have created a difficult test for Germany’s authorities and political leaders. They must address the incidents while confronting public fears over infrastructure security and possible foreign interference.
