Trump Suggests Renaming the Strait of Hormuz After Himself

Donald Trump has floated a new name for one of the world’s most strategically important waterways: the “Trump Strait.” In a short post on Truth Social, the U.S. president asked whether the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed after him now that he says the United States controls it.

“Now that we have it under U.S. control, should we change the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote. He added that, like America itself, it would be “hotter than ever before,” followed by his customary “thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Trump did not explain how such a renaming might take place. He has repeatedly argued that Iran does not control the waterway, including during previous statements about Iranian attacks on ships traveling through the strait. One argument he has cited is that some vessels use routes designated by U.S. forces.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said 17 million barrels of crude oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz aboard tankers on Monday. That was the highest volume since the turn of February and March, when the war with Iran began. Before the conflict, the average daily volume stood at about 20 million barrels.

Tensions in the region remain high. The United States continues its maritime blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran continues attacking ships. Saudi authorities said a Saudi tanker came under fire on Monday night and that two crew members died in the strike.
