Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime: The Series and Films Worth Watching in September 2026

“Babylon Berlin” is returning for one final descent into Germany’s darkest historical moment. Nearly a decade after the first episodes of what was then the country’s most expensive television project, the series will follow the opening months of 1933, when the Nazis took power.

The fifth and final season arrives on the ARD media library on Sept. 10. Its contemporary resonance is difficult to miss, not only because of its subject matter. The new episodes will appear shortly after the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, giving the series’ portrait of a society staggering toward the abyss an especially immediate edge.

Netflix will also bring Mariana Enriquez’s “My Sad Dead” to the screen from Sept. 24. The Argentine writer combines ghost stories and social criticism in a form of feminist horror. The story follows Emma, a 60-year-old reclusive doctor who can see and hear the dead. When her niece arrives with the same gift, the balance between the living and the ghosts of the past begins to shift. Personal trauma, state violence and social marginalization all enter the story.

Chilean director Pablo Larraín, known for “Spencer,” “El Club” and “Neruda,” is adapting the tale as a miniseries for Netflix. Disney+ will offer another unsettling vision with the new German series “City of Blood,” beginning Sept. 16. It imagines a future Berlin made nearly uninhabitable by the heat of climate apocalypse. A blood-covered Lars Eidinger in rave glasses appears alongside two sisters investigating the schemes of fascist vampires.

The ambitious plot draws on “Berlinoir,” a 2003 graphic-novel series and political parable. Whether fascism, climate crisis and vampires combine into a distinctly German version of “The Vampire Diaries” will become clear in September.
