Netflix to tell the story of Keiko, the "Free Willy" orca who lived in Mexico

Netflix is set to release a new documentary chronicling the remarkable life of Keiko, the orca who captured hearts as the star of the beloved 1993 film "Free Willy." The production, currently without a title or release date, will delve into the orca's journey from her time at Mexico City's Reino Aventura amusement park to the ambitious, real-life efforts to fulfill the movie's fictional happy ending.

Directed by Santiago Fábregas and produced by Mezcla and The Lift Films, the documentary aims to examine the phenomenon surrounding the film and its impact on Keiko. It will address the ethical considerations and unforeseen consequences of transforming a living creature into a symbol of escape from captivity, particularly after the film's success sparked global calls for her release.
