New bike-sharing service to launch in Helsinki

Helsinki is set to welcome a new player in its urban mobility landscape with the upcoming launch of Donkey Republic's bike-sharing service in late July 2026. The international company will introduce around 700 traditional pedal-powered bicycles to the city's streets, operating in partnership with the Finnish urban cycling firm Kaakau Oy.

Donkey Republic will manage the fleet of bicycles and the digital platform through which users can rent them via the company's mobile application. Customers will have the option to choose between single rides or day passes. Kaakau Oy will be responsible for the practical aspects of the service within Helsinki, ensuring the bikes are well-maintained and accessible where needed.

The company emphasizes that its service is intended to complement, not replace, Helsinki's existing public transport system, including the HSL city bike scheme. Donkey Republic also promises more affordable pricing for short urban journeys compared to electric scooter services.

Currently operating in over 50 cities across Europe, Donkey Republic views Helsinki as a prime location for expansion, recognizing the Finnish capital as one of Europe's leading cycling cities. This move is expected to further enhance the city's cycling infrastructure and provide residents and visitors with more diverse transportation options.
