New car launches struggle to break into Argentina's top sellers despite market slump

Argentina's automotive market experienced a nearly 10% decline in new vehicle sales during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, according to the Association of Automobile Dealers of the Argentine Republic (Acara).

Amidst this market downturn, a notable trend was the influx of new car models, primarily from Chinese brands, entering the Argentine market. These new brands and models aimed to compete across various segments.

The Toyota Yaris Cross emerged as the most successful new launch, selling 4,479 units since its February debut. However, this volume was insufficient to break into the top 10 best-selling vehicles, a list dominated by long-standing models like the Toyota Hilux, Fiat Cronos, and Peugeot 208.

Following the Yaris Cross, the BYD Atto 2, also a compact SUV launched in February, recorded 2,545 sales, becoming BYD's top seller in Argentina. BYD also has the Dolphin Mini and Song Pro among the top 50 sellers, though they were launched in the latter half of 2025.

The Nissan Kait, another new compact SUV, secured the third spot among new successful launches, with 472 units sold since its April introduction. While it appeared in June's top 50 list, its first-half cumulative sales might not be enough to maintain that position.
