New Commander Takes Charge of U.S. Forces Stationed in Poland

Gen. Thomas M. Feltey has taken command of the U.S. Army's V Corps, whose forward headquarters, Camp Kościuszko, operates from Poznan, Poland.

The change took place during a ceremony at the corps' main base at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on Monday, Aug. 31. Gen. Christopher C. LaNeve, the acting chief of staff of the U.S. Army, attended the ceremony.

The U.S. Defense Department announced in July that Feltey had been selected for promotion to lieutenant general and chosen to lead V Corps. He had been commanding the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. The U.S. Senate approved his nomination, and the transfer of command had been planned for October.

Feltey replaces Gen. Charles Costanza, who was unexpectedly removed in early August. ABC News reported at the time that the decision came amid a broader reorganization of senior Army leadership under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, during which more than 20 high-ranking officers were removed from their posts, often without public explanations. The network, citing a source familiar with the matter, said Costanza's removal was not part of Hegseth's campaign to change the Army's leadership and was not political. Gen. John B. Mountford served as acting commander after Costanza's removal.

V Corps supervises U.S. forces and coordinates operations across Europe, including American ground operations on NATO's eastern flank. Its responsibilities include planning and logistics. The corps' role expanded after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, as it helped coordinate U.S. support for Kyiv. Its press office said the unit would prepare for Avenger Triad 26 and other upcoming European exercises, increase readiness and strengthen formations while remaining ready to operate alongside NATO allies and partners.
