New development in Eyüp Can Güner case: Cuts on body being investigated

A legal case is progressing in Turkey concerning the death of Eyüp Can Güner, a restaurant worker who died after falling from a building in Istanbul on July 28, 2025. Initial reports indicated Güner suffered head trauma, broken bones, cuts, and internal injuries. The suspect, Necmettin Ulaş, who was seen chasing Güner on security footage, has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide, facing up to 25 years in prison.

During the third hearing at the Anamur Heavy Penal Court, Ulaş, participating via video link from prison, maintained his innocence. He claimed he did not harm Güner and only intended to play with him, requesting his release and acquittal. Ulaş has been in custody for over a year.

I have been in custody for over a year for an act I did not commit. I definitely did not harm Eyüp Can that day. My intention was to play with him. I request my release at this stage and acquittal on the merits.

However, Güner's mother, Güllü Can, insists her son was fatally stabbed by Ulaş and rejects autopsy reports suggesting otherwise. She stated that no one else entered the passage where the incident occurred that day, holding Ulaş responsible for her son's death.

The court has decided to keep Ulaş in custody and has postponed the trial to allow for further investigation. A key element is determining whether the cuts on Güner's body were indeed caused by a stabbing, as indicated by the mother's claims and pending forensic reports from the Forensic Medicine Institute.
