New EU packaging rules threaten small businesses

A new European Union regulation on packaging and packaging waste, set to take effect soon, is raising alarms among small businesses in Finland, who fear the bureaucratic hurdles and costs could prove insurmountable. The regulation aims to standardize waste management across member states but is being criticized for its potential impact on smaller enterprises.

Juuso Virtanen, a craftsman who produces leather wallets, expressed his concerns, stating that the new rules might lead him to cease exporting his goods to countries where sales do not cover the mandatory fees. In a worst-case scenario, Virtanen, who operates as a sole proprietor, fears the regulation could force his business to close entirely.

Tuomo Aunola, a senior inspector, acknowledged the complexity of the system being implemented. While the EU regulation intends to promote environmental responsibility and a circular economy, its practical application is proving challenging for businesses with limited resources. The mandatory fees and extensive reporting requirements are particularly burdensome for small-scale producers who lack the administrative capacity of larger corporations.

The Finnish government and EU officials are facing pressure to address these concerns and find ways to mitigate the negative impact on small businesses.
