New Jersey acquires farmland near historic battlefield, blocking development

New Jersey has stepped in to preserve 22 acres of farmland adjacent to the historic Monmouth Battlefield State Park, acquiring the property for $15 million and halting a controversial industrial development. The move by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) ensures the land, previously slated for a massive warehouse complex, will become a permanent part of the park.

The 22-acre parcel, located along Route 33 in Manalapan, New Jersey, was once a strawberry farm. Its proximity to the Monmouth Battlefield State Park, the site of a pivotal 1778 battle in the American Revolution, had raised significant concerns among preservationists and local residents.

In 2024, Monmouth County officials had approved plans for a 192,560-square-foot industrial development. This project, proposed by Monmouth Battlefield Flex, LLC, was seen by proponents as a source of jobs and tax revenue. However, critics argued that the warehouses would visually intrude upon the historic landscape, increase traffic, and detract from the park's character.

The acquisition represents a victory for a community campaign that emphasized the importance of preserving the battlefield's setting. It highlights the ongoing tension in New Jersey between economic development pressures and the need to protect significant historical sites and open spaces.
