New Lexus NX loses its convenient dials but gains greater range

After five years on the market, the Lexus NX has received a substantial facelift. Its overall shape remains familiar, but the SUV now has new bumpers and lights, including a new rear lighting signature. Its length has increased by 3 centimeters to 469 centimeters, while the other dimensions remain unchanged, including the 269-centimeter wheelbase.

The most noticeable changes appear inside. The NX receives a new dashboard already seen in the Lexus ES, a 14-inch infotainment screen running the latest Lexus Connect software and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. The center console has been simplified, and Lexus has added Responsive Hidden Switches that remain concealed until a hand approaches.

There is one clear drawback for drivers who liked the previous layout: Lexus has removed the convenient climate-control dials. New cabin options include Clay Red upholstery, Prominence upholstery reserved for the F Sport version, Dark Brown Oak trim and Forged Bamboo trim made with 55 percent biomaterials.

The new steering wheel offers a wider range of adjustment, while taller drivers can lower their seats further. Higher equipment versions add Lexus Sensory Concierge, which coordinates ambient lighting, screen patterns, climate control, seat heating and individually selected cabin fragrances through three modes: Inspire, Radiance and Revitalise. Lexus also says its Safety System+ package now has longer sensor range and cameras with a wider field of view.

Lexus has stiffened the body, revised the suspension and recalibrated the steering, changes aimed at improving the NX’s handling. The company also says it has made the cabin quieter. In the updated hybrid systems, the power-control unit and transmission form a single compact module. The unit weighs 10 kilograms less and is 10 centimeters lower, helping reduce the center of gravity. Silicon-carbide semiconductors reduce energy losses, supporting lower fuel consumption and greater power. The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is set to offer more than 100 kilometers of range.
