New Mitsubishi Xpander Revealed with Angular Design, Potential Hybrid and ADAS Tech

Mitsubishi Motors has unveiled initial details and images of its upcoming "New XPANDER," slated for release in Southeast Asian markets, with significant anticipation in Vietnam where it has consistently led its segment. The forthcoming generation of the popular MPV sports a more robust, angular design, departing from the current model's softer lines and adopting a style reminiscent of Mitsubishi's SUV lineup.

While covered in camouflage, the revealed images suggest a longer front end and a more squared-off rear, signaling a departure from the current generation's rounded aesthetics. Observers anticipate the new Xpander will adopt Mitsubishi's latest design language, seen in models like the Xforce, Xpander, and the new Pajero, potentially featuring T-shaped LED daytime running lights and a larger, modernized grille.

Inside, the Xpander is expected to receive substantial technological upgrades. Drawing parallels with the Xforce, it might feature a larger 12.3-inch central infotainment display, an increase from the current 10-inch screen. The more boxy exterior could also translate to improved headroom for rear passengers and increased cargo space, though significant interior breakthroughs are not expected in this mainstream MPV segment.

Regarding powertrain, the current Vietnamese market Xpander uses a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. Some Southeast Asian markets, like Thailand, already offer a hybrid variant combining a 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor. Mitsubishi is likely to maintain existing engine options while enhancing their efficiency. A key expectation for the Vietnamese market is the inclusion of ADAS, a feature already present in the Thai version, which would help the Xpander compete against rivals like the Honda BR-V and Suzuki XL7 that offer similar advanced safety technologies.
