New stickers on Intercity trains spark online questions, PKP responds

New markings appearing on some PKP Intercity trains have sparked considerable discussion and speculation among internet users.

The stickers, which state that a pledge has been established in favor of the State Treasury, were first noticed on wagons and shared widely on social media platforms like Facebook and X. This led to various interpretations, with some users suggesting it indicated a potential liquidation of state assets.

PKP Intercity has since clarified the situation, explaining that the signs are placed on rolling stock covered by a registered pledge. This pledge serves as security for guarantees issued by the State Treasury. The requirement to mark the wagons stems from agreements with the Ministry of Finance.

These guarantees are associated with long-term loans granted to PKP Intercity by the European Investment Bank. The bank has provided approximately 2 billion Polish zloty (around 434 million euros) to finance the modernization of over 30% of the carrier's rolling stock by 2028. The markings are thus a procedural requirement related to securing these crucial investments in upgrading the train fleet.
