New Traffic Light Begins Operating at Major Montevideo Intersection

A new traffic light is now operating at the intersection of Bulevar Batlle y Ordóñez and Arechavaleta in Montevideo’s Aires Puros neighborhood.

The Montevideo municipal government said the two-phase signal began operating on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. The installation responds to road-safety concerns for pedestrians and vehicles at the busy avenue crossing. Officials will control it centrally through the departmental Mobility Management Center.

The municipality’s Mobility Department also announced three new public transport stops, introduced from the final days of August to improve access to the Metropolitan Transport System in the capital’s northern and northwestern areas.

Two stops were created on Camino Coronel Raíz, between Camino Osvaldo Rodríguez and National Route 102, one on each side of the road. Line 150, serving Ciudadela or La Pilarica depending on direction, will use them. Another stop was installed on Luis Caviglia, between Camino General Leandro Gómez and Bulevar Aparicio Saravia, for the L9 line toward Intercambiador Belloni and Villa Farré. A final stop on Bulevar Aparicio Saravia, between Julio César Michielli and Francisco Hordeñana, will serve line 100 toward Plaza España.
