New Virgin Mary sculpture installed on Monterrey's Santa Catarina River bridge

A new seven-meter-tall sculpture of the Virgin Mary now graces the pedestrian bridge crossing the Santa Catarina River in Monterrey, Mexico. This prominent installation, located in the Obispado area, is part of an initiative to preserve a cherished local tradition.

The unveiling was announced by Nuevo León Governor Samuel García and Mariana Rodríguez Cantú, head of Amar a Nuevo León, through social media. The sculpture, crafted by local artist Nemesio Dueñas in Linares, weighs approximately 700 kilograms. It symbolically replaces an earlier image that had been a fixture near the river for years but was lost following severe weather events.

State authorities explained that the original figure was buried by Hurricane Alex in 2010 and reappeared years later, only to be damaged again by Hurricane Hanna. The new sculpture has been placed in the central part of the bridge, near the ISSSTE Clinic, aiming to keep alive a site that holds significance for many residents of the Monterrey metropolitan area.

This action by state authorities seeks to revive a religious and cultural symbol deeply connected to one of the most emblematic spaces in Monterrey. The installation ensures that this important piece of local identity continues to be visible and honored.
