French court blocks law banning social media for under-15s, citing rights violations

A French court has struck down a law that prohibited minors under 15 from using social media, deeming it a violation of fundamental freedoms. France had become the first European Union country to approve a total ban on social media platforms for this age group last month, amid growing global concerns about the detrimental effects of digital content on children. The legislation, a significant measure during President Emmanuel Macron's tenure, also included a ban on mobile phones in schools.

In response to the court's decision, Macron stated his commitment to enacting the prohibition by spring. He has tasked Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu with rapidly developing a legally robust proposal that respects the Constitutional Council's ruling and the European legal framework. Macron emphasized that the president, government, and Parliament would collaboratively determine the necessary means to protect children from social media before his current term concludes.

This ruling follows similar discussions in other countries, including the UK, which has implemented restrictions on social media access for those under 16. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between protecting minors and upholding freedom of expression in the digital age.
