New Website Guides Icelanders on Solar Eclipse Travel Rules

Iceland's Civil Aviation Administration (Samgöngustofa) has introduced a new information website in anticipation of the upcoming solar eclipse on August 12. The site aims to clarify regulations and ensure safety for all activities related to the celestial event.

Commercial passenger transport by sea, including sightseeing tours offered in conjunction with the eclipse, requires permits. These regulations apply to various types of boats and are designed to guarantee the safety of passengers and crew, covering aspects like safety equipment, insurance, and manning levels.

Furthermore, the administration is reminding the public that all drone flights in Iceland are subject to current regulations, with no exceptions for the eclipse. Operators are urged to familiarize themselves with airspace information and any applicable restrictions before flying.

The website also addresses private flights, stating that they cannot be offered to the public for a fee. Rules regarding cost-sharing in private flights are clear, and both pilots and passengers are responsible for adhering to them.
