Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth reach League Cup last 16

The favorites delivered in the English League Cup, although Newcastle United had to survive a late scare against Millwall before joining Bournemouth and Crystal Palace in the last 16.

Bournemouth settled its match against Championship side Lincoln City quickly, with Ryan Christie scoring a hat trick and Rayan adding another goal. Crystal Palace also had little trouble, beating Middlesbrough 3-0 through goals from Jorgen Strand-Larsen and Daichi Kamada.

Palace entered the match after ending a run of two defeats to start the season with a win over Fulham at the weekend. The Middlesbrough victory gave the club a second consecutive win.

Newcastle faced a tougher test at The Den. Millwall, who came close to promotion to the Premier League last season, created the better chances and hit the post late in the match. Newcastle nevertheless advanced when Joe Willock scored near the end. Spanish midfielder Nico González started and played the full 90 minutes as he continued adapting to the team.

Sunderland beat Hull City 1-0, despite Hull having opened its Premier League season unbeaten with seven points from nine. Bradford City, from League One, also advanced by eliminating Leyton Orient 3-1. The round continues Wednesday with Chelsea against Leeds United, while clubs competing in the Champions League will play their League Cup matches next week.
