NHRC warns public over hacked official X account

Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission warned the public not to trust messages from its official X account after announcing that the account had been compromised.

Fatimah Agwai, the commission’s director of corporate affairs and external linkages, said the account was under the unauthorised control of an individual or account operating as @ephesus_lib. A check found that the account was sharing cryptocurrency-related messages. Its name remained unchanged, but its official logo had been replaced.

The commission said it would provide an update through its verified and established communication channels once an official X presence became available. The account had about 12,000 followers. A similar incident occurred on 15 August, when Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters account was also flooded with cryptocurrency-related posts.
