Nicaragua ratifies friendship pact with Russia-occupied Donetsk region

Nicaragua's National Assembly has officially ratified a friendship agreement with Russia, establishing ties between the capital city of Managua and the Russian-occupied Ukrainian region of Donetsk. The accord, signed in June 2026 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, received unanimous approval from Nicaraguan lawmakers.

The agreement outlines a framework for cooperation across multiple sectors, including economy, education, culture, sports, tourism, media, and local development. Representing Nicaragua in the signing was Laureano Ortega Murillo, son of Nicaraguan co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

This ratification underscores Nicaragua's strong alignment with Russia on the international stage. Nicaraguan presidential advisor Ortega Murillo previously labeled Ukraine's government as "illegitimate" and a "puppet" of NATO in May 2026. He reaffirmed Nicaragua's support for Russia in shaping a "new world order" and challenging "hegemonism" in favor of multipolarity.

Furthermore, in July 2025, the Sandinista government expressed confidence in Russia's victory over Ukraine and recognized the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia as part of Russian territory. Daniel Ortega, who has been in power since 2007, maintains close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, continuing a historical relationship where Russia provided Soviet-era weaponry to Nicaragua's armed forces during the first Sandinista government (1979-1990).
