Nicaragua seizes 475 cocaine packages near Costa Rican border

Nicaraguan military forces intercepted a significant drug shipment, seizing 475 packages of cocaine along the Frío River in the San Carlos municipality, near the Costa Rican border. The operation, conducted by the Southern Military Detachment, encountered suspects traveling in a boat who fled upon detecting the troops, leaving the illicit cargo behind. The 475 rectangular packages, containing cocaine, were discovered hidden within 19 sacks on the abandoned vessel.

While the weight of the seized cocaine was not disclosed, authorities confirmed that the drugs and the boat were handed over to the competent judicial authorities. Nicaragua employs a strategy called 'Muro de Contención' (Containment Wall) aimed at preventing the circulation of drugs and related finances within populated areas. The military highlighted its "close cooperation ties" with regional countries, the United States, Mexico, and Russia as part of this strategy.

Nicaragua's geographical location places it within a key corridor for drug trafficking, originating in South America and destined for North America, where Mexican cartels are prominent and consumer bases are large. This strategic position underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the nation in its anti-narcotics efforts.
