Nicușor Dan tells students that education begins with trust, patience and courage

President Nicușor Dan marked the start of the new school year with a message focused on the human relationships behind education. For children, he said, the day brings emotion and hope. For younger pupils it is the first step into discovery, while older students face a new stage of preparation for exams, careers and adulthood.

“Education means the trust that a teacher offers a student, the patience of a parent and the courage of a child to ask questions, make mistakes and try again,” Dan said in a message published by the Presidential Administration. He added that education involves more than grades, registers and examinations. It also means personal discovery and preparation for life.

The president said schools must teach students to think critically, not merely provide information. In a world shaped by the internet and artificial intelligence, he said students need to verify information, distinguish facts from disinformation and form their own opinions using reliable sources.

Dan thanked teachers for their tenacity and dedication, describing their work as “responsibility, professionalism and care for every student.” He said no reform or investment could succeed without respected, well-trained and supported teachers, including through working and salary conditions that reflect the importance of the profession.

He also said successive education reforms, some poorly implemented, had created distrust and demotivation. Future changes, he argued, should rely on data and evaluations of results, while also providing dialogue, resources and enough time for implementation. To students, he described education as the safest investment in their future and urged them not to neglect the unique experience of spending time with classmates and friends.
