Nigeria backs Shagari for NAM Youth leadership

Nigeria's Federal Government has officially backed Muhammad Bello Bala Shagari's bid for leadership within the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Organization (NAMYO). The endorsement comes from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, which lauded Shagari as a distinguished youth leader with a strong record in service, development, and international diplomacy.

The ministry highlighted Shagari's experience, integrity, and leadership capabilities, noting his significant contributions to youth participation, international cooperation, and constructive engagement among young people. These qualities, the ministry stated, make him exceptionally qualified for a higher role within NAMYO.

Shagari, a former President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, is a prominent figure in youth leadership. He has been actively involved in youth advocacy and diplomacy both nationally and internationally. NAMYO, established in 2022 in Baku, Azerbaijan, unites young people from 121 member states to foster cooperation, leadership, peacebuilding, sustainable development, and international solidarity.

This election holds particular significance as Shagari could become NAMYO's first elected Chairperson. His potential leadership is anticipated to enhance Nigeria's standing in youth diplomacy within the Non-Aligned Movement and strengthen its role in promoting South-South cooperation and global youth engagement. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development expressed strong confidence in his ability to advance the organization's goals among member states. Shagari is also the grandson of Nigeria's first elected president, the late Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari.
