Nigeria Busts Transnational Drug Ring, Seizes 1.63 Million Tramadol Pills

Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully disrupted a major transnational drug trafficking syndicate. The operation intercepted 1.63 million pills of tramadol, a potent painkiller, concealed within two trailers attempting to transport the illicit cargo from Lagos to Kano.

The agency's intelligence-led operation revealed specially fabricated compartments beneath the trailers' cargo floors used to hide the drugs. This seizure follows another recent interception of 558,900 tramadol pills smuggled into Nigeria via the Togo-Benin Republic route. The two latest trailers were intercepted on July 2 and July 4, with drivers Jabir Kabiru and Muhammed Nuhu, both 22, arrested respectively.

In parallel operations, NDLEA operatives at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos seized 4.7 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a potent synthetic cannabis, arriving from Canada. Two cargo agents and a suspect attempting to collect the shipment were arrested. Further investigations led to the apprehension of a businesswoman, Chioma Nneka Mokeme, in Lagos, who admitted her involvement and cited a Canadian-based friend as her introducer.

The crackdown extended to other states. In Rivers State, an 80-year-old man was arrested with cannabis. In Edo State, a couple was apprehended during a raid on a suspected drug warehouse, resulting in the seizure of 219.5 kilograms of cannabis sativa and 192.67 kilograms of compressed Canadian Loud. A Chadian national and her Nigerian associate were also arrested in Lagos following the interception of illicit substances.
