Nigeria Launches Tinubu Light Initiative for Renewable Energy Access to One Million MSMEs

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the Tinubu Light Initiative, a nationwide renewable energy program designed to supply affordable clean energy to one million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative seeks to reduce production costs, foster job creation, and accelerate industrial growth.

The program was unveiled by the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) during the National Showcase of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 in Abuja. Dr. Kazeem Raji, Director-General and CEO of NBTI, stated that the initiative is expected to generate over 50,000 direct jobs, promote clean energy adoption, strengthen local manufacturing, and enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses.

The Tinubu Light Initiative seeks to change this narrative. Through innovative financing models, strategic partnerships, renewable energy technologies and nationwide implementation, this initiative will provide affordable clean energy solutions to one million Nigerian MSMEs.

Raji explained that the Tinubu Light Initiative addresses a major constraint for Nigerian businesses: high energy costs stemming from unreliable electricity supply and reliance on fossil fuel generators. The program will utilize innovative financing models, strategic partnerships, and renewable energy technologies to provide accessible clean energy solutions.

Raji emphasized that the program is more than just electrification; it is an industrial policy, an employment strategy, a poverty reduction program, a climate action initiative, and a national productivity agenda, all contributing to Nigeria's future prosperity. The program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, positioning innovation, science, technology, and entrepreneurship as key drivers of sustainable economic development.
