Nigerian Consumers Paid N208.15 Billion for Electricity in May, NERC Reports

Electricity consumers across Nigeria collectively paid N208.15 billion for power supplied in May 2026, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This figure reflects an improvement in revenue collection efficiency by electricity distribution companies (DisCos), even as billing efficiency saw a slight decrease.

The NERC's Commercial Performance Factsheet for May 2026 indicates that the DisCos received electricity valued at N328.95 billion during the month, an increase of 8.58% from April. However, the amount billed to customers stood at N252.87 billion, resulting in a billing efficiency of 76.87%. This represents a drop of 6.45 percentage points compared to the previous month.

Despite the dip in billing efficiency, the industry achieved a collection efficiency of 82.32%, up by 1.66 percentage points from April. This enhanced collection enabled the 11 DisCos to gather N208.15 billion from customers, a 2.23% rise from the prior month's collections. The industry's overall revenue recovery efficiency was reported at 77.31% for May.

Performance varied significantly among the distribution companies. Ikeja Electric emerged as the top performer in revenue recovery, achieving 94.63%. Eko DisCo followed with 91.54%, and Abuja DisCo with 84.84%. In contrast, Kaduna DisCo recorded the lowest recovery efficiency at 39.75%, with Jos DisCo at 45.38% and Kano DisCo at 49.80%, highlighting persistent challenges in revenue collection in these regions within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
